Reflection on Medical Dental Optical Surgical Mission
This year's MDOS Mission was another activity where I was able to learn new things and realize how inefficient the Brent's system is. Let me first talk about what I learned. My role in this year's is different from previous years' that there were more interaction between myself and patients. I had to deal with six hundred people on this day. There were very polite people, and of course, there were very rude people. However, my job was to guide them. This was not easy because it is not simply announcing, rather communication. I had to listen to many concerns (rational and irrational) and respond to them. Not all people understood English. However these were all part of my learning. I learned to be patient, and skills to deal with different people. I also learned that there must be changes made to make future MDOS Missions efficiently. NHS members had to cut lots and lots of numbered papers. This is done every year. There should be a new way so that we can stop prinding out the new ones and waste time on cutting them every year. Better communication system is needed too. Admin saying that sertain section is closed and not made a big confussion to both students (volunteers) and patients. Doctors need to be told to go to their lunch in small groups so that the section is will not suddenly shut down. I know that having a continuous meal-sized snacks every hour is important. I also know that their lunch is very valuable, not to mention their coffee break after the lunch break. But leaving patients for an hour altogether creates malfuntion of the section. It is important, very important for the admin to tell doctors about this. I did inform these concerns to admin already, but I will not be surprised to see the same thing happening next year. It was a truely significant experience where I learned how to act to different people and to face different problems and how to deal with them.

That sounds really frustrating. Have you thought about writing a formal letter in which you describe what you observed and the effect that it had on the patients and then you explain your proposal to solve the problem? The worst thing that could happen is that it will be ignored, the best thing is that people will receive care in a more timely manner next year and it will be a smoother day for all.
